One of the reasons why I’m spamming Conrad motherfucking Veidt today. This is from Different From The Others, a 1919 film portraying homosexuality in a sympathetic light and pointing out some people were just born that way. That’s right, kids. From 1919.
I used to know a website that had a reconstruction of the film, but the link seems to have disappeared. But I can definitely recommend it if you can find it, if only for the historical value and the Veidt prettehs. Not sure if this link to Google video works, but give it a go.
I saw Victim, the 1961 British movie that was supposedly based on this one, but as I recall that movie changed the story considerably. For one thing, Dirk Bogarde’s character is married, and at the end (spoilers below)

Victim also was geared towards making sure the audience knew that being homosexual meant being either miserable and hunted and prey to extortionists if you were lower-class and unconnected or just honest, or sleazy and decadent and manipulative if you were upper-class. The solution to being gay in Victim was to struggle against your aberrant feelings and basically force yourself into a “proper” heterosexual life.
